Evidence for a ∼ 43 GeV γ-ray line signal in a stacking analysis of the Virgo, Fornax, and Ophiuchus Galaxy clusters (full preprint)

Among various signals, the GeV-TeV γ-ray line has been taken as the smoking gun signal of the dark matter annihilation and decay since no known astrophysical or physical process(es) could generate such a peculiar spectrum. With 15.5 years of Fermi-LAT P8R3 publicly available data, we search for the γ-ray line emission in the directions of 13 massive galaxy clusters at redshifts z ≤ 0.028 with an unbinned likelihood analysis. A γ-ray line signal at ∼ 43.2 GeV has a net test statistic (TS) value of ≈ 30 if we take into account only the data in the directions of the Virgo, Fornax, and Ophiuchus clusters, three massive clusters with the highest J-factors expected to generate the dark matter annihilation signal. The absence of this signal in the inner Galaxy disfavors both the instrumental effect and the canonical dark matter annihilation interpretation, and a more sophisticated dark matter model or very peculiar astrophysical scenario might be needed. This γ-ray line signal, if intrinsic, could be unambiguously verified by the Very Large Area γ-ray SpaceTelescope in its first two years of performance.
This research has made use of data obtained from the High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center (HEASARC), provided by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center

Search for a gamma-ray line feature from a group of nearby Galaxy clusters with Fermi LAT Pass 8 data

Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally bound objects in the universe and may be suitable targets for indirect dark matter searches. With 85 months of Fermi-LAT Pass 8 publicly available data, we analyze the gamma-ray emission in the directions of 16 nearby Galaxy Clusters with an unbinned likelihood analysis. No globally statistically-significant γ−ray line feature is identified and a tentative line signal may be present at ∼ 43 GeV. The 95% confidence level upper limits on the velocity-averaged cross section of dark matter particles annihilating into double γ−rays (i.e.,<σv>_χχ→γγ) are derived. Unless very optimistic boost factors of dark matter annihilation in these Galaxy Clusters have been assumed, such constraints are much weaker than the bounds set by the Galactic γ−ray data.

Und dazu gabs auch schon theoretische Interpretationsversuche:

Interpretations of the possible 42.7 GeV γ-ray line

Recently Liang et al. found a tentative line signal at about 43 GeV in the directions of sixteen nearby Galaxy Clusters. If arising from dark matter annihilation, the mass of the dark matter particles should be m_χ ∼ 43 GeV and the annihilation cross section <σv> ∼ [5×10^−28 /(BF/10³)] (cm)³/s is needed, where BF is the averaged boost factor of the annihilation signal of these Galaxy Clusters. In this work we discuss several models which could interpret these features and estimate the model parameters. Usually sizeable coupling parameter is needed. The 2σ upper limits on the crosssection of the dark matter annihilation into various final states such as b¯b, µ+µ− and so on are also presented.

Interessant, aber warum Dunkle Materie? Könnte es nicht etwas anderes sein? Was bedeuten diese 43 GeV?

Dazu zählen u.a.
