Die japanische Raumfahrtagentur JAXA plant schon seit einiger Zeit, auch mit internationaler Beteiligung, eine Mission mit dem Akronym MMX (Martian Moon Explorer) zum Marsmond Phobos, wobei auch Bodenproben zur Erde zurückgebracht werden sollen.

Eine formale Genehmigung steht noch aus, aber jetzt wurde schon mal eine vorläufige Vereinbarung mit der französischen Raumfahrtagentur CNES unterzeichnet:

France, Japan aim to land probe on Mars moon

Wenn alles nach Plan läuft, soll MMX 2024 starten und fünf Jahre später mit den Bodenproben zur Erde zurückkehren.

MMX

Jetzt ist auch die NASA dabei: NASA Selects Instrument for Future International Mission to Martian Moons

The selected instrument, named MEGANE (pronounced meh-gah-nay, meaning “eyeglasses” in Japanese), will be developed by a team led by David Lawrence of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland. MEGANE will give MMX the ability to “see” the elemental composition of Phobos, by measuring the energies of neutrons and gamma-rays emitted from the small moon. The elementary particles are emitted naturally as a result of the high-energy cosmic rays and solar energetic particles that continually strike and penetrate the surface of Phobos.
