Mit einem Durchmesser von 250 km ist Psyche einer der größten Asteroiden des Hauptgürtels. Radarbeobachtungen zeigten, dass Psyche aus Eisen und Nickel besteht.

NASA-Mission: Psyche wurde im Januar 2017 als Ziel für eine gleichnamige unbemannte Mission im Rahmen des Discovery-Programms der NASA ausgewählt. Die geplante Sonde soll 2023 starten und ab 2030 für mindestens anderthalb Jahre den Asteroiden aus einer zunehmend engeren Umlaufbahn erforschen.

NASA tests thruster bound for metal world

Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) thrusters use inert gases, like xenon, which are then energized by the electric power generated from onboard solar arrays to provide gentle, non-stop thrust.

A SEP system, like the one used for this mission, operates more efficiently than a conventional chemical propulsion system, which would be impractical for this type of mission.

The reduced fuel mass allows the mission to enter orbit around Psyche and provides additional space for all of the mission's scientific payload.

NASA's Psyche mission has a metal world in its sights

After extensive review, NASA Headquarters in Washington has approved the mission to begin the final design and fabrication phase, otherwise known as Phase C.

The Psyche spacecraft will arrive at Asteroid Psyche on Jan. 31, 2026, after flying by Mars in 2023.

Asteroid Psyche is one of the most intriguing targets in the main asteroid belt. While most asteroids are rocky or icy bodies, scientists think Psyche is composed mostly of iron and nickel, similar to Earth's core.
 
Der geplante Start am 1. August 2022 rückt näher. Jetzt wurden die riesigen Solarpanele erstmals im Labor entfaltet. Im Einsatz sollen sie dann den nötigen Strom zum Betrieb von vier SPT-140 Hall-Effect Antriebsaggregaten liefern.

NASA's Psyche gets huge solar arrays for trip to metal-rich asteroid

At 75 square meters, the five-panel, cross-shaped solar arrays are the largest ever installed at JPL, which has built many spacecraft over the decades. When the arrays fully deploy in flight, the spacecraft will be about the size of a singles tennis court. After a 3 ½-year solar-powered cruise, the craft will arrive in 2026 at the asteroid Psyche, which is 280 kilometers at its widest point and thought to be unusually rich in metal. The spacecraft will spend nearly two years making increasingly close orbits of the asteroid to study it.

NASA Announces Launch Delay for Psyche Asteroid Mission

NASA announced Friday the Psyche asteroid mission, the agency’s first mission designed to study a metal-rich asteroid, will not make its planned 2022 launch attempt.

Due to the late delivery of the spacecraft’s flight software and testing equipment, NASA does not have sufficient time to complete the testing needed ahead of its remaining launch period this year, which ends on Oct. 11. The mission team needs more time to ensure that the software will function properly in flight.

Ähnlich wie bei Marsmissionen muss man ja ein gewisses Startfenster einhalten. Mit einer siderischen Umlaufperiode von 5 Jahren öffnet sich das immerhin alle 15 Monate:

The mission’s 2022 launch period, which ran from Aug. 1 through Oct. 11, would have allowed the spacecraft to arrive at the asteroid Psyche in 2026. There are possible launch periods in both 2023 and 2024, but the relative orbital positions of Psyche and Earth mean the spacecraft would not arrive at the asteroid until 2029 and 2030, respectively. The exact dates of these potential launch periods are yet to be determined.

PS: Ankunft am Asteroiden übrigens im August 2029.
Bis dahin nur ein Vorbeiflug an einem anderen Objekt, und zwar im Mai 2026 am Mars.
