Space-based Data Centers

Space-based Data Centers

SpaceX seeks FCC nod to build data center constellation in space
  • SpaceX is requesting permission to launch as many as 1 million satellites into the Earth's orbit in order to pull off Elon Musk's latest grand vision of putting data centers in space to do complex computing for artificial intelligence. In a filing with the Federal Communications Commission made on Jan. 30, SpaceX said it's creating the solar-powered network in order to "accommodate the explosive growth of data demands driven by AI."
The FCC request comes as SpaceX, which is eyeing an IPO later this year, is exploring a potential merger with Musk's xAI, a tie-up that would consolidate cash flow while bringing together capabilities in artificial intelligence, satellite production and rocket launches.

Google Takes the A.I. Data Center Race to Outer Space

Can Tech Companies Really Put Data Centers in Space?

Is Google really lauunching a data center into space next month?

Not exactly. With help from SpaceX and the satellite company Planet Labs, Google is launching a satellite that carries the equivalent of a single data center server. The launch is an early test of what Google hopes to do on a much larger scale in the years to come.

That single server is a lot like the thousands of machines that Google typically packs into its giant data centers here on Earth. It is equipped with four specialized computer chips, called tensor processing units, or T.P.U.s, that the company uses to build and deliver its chatbots and other A.I. technologies.

The plan is to put many of these computers into orbit and allow them to communicate, so that they can operate like a giant data center.
