"
NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is
curated by two astrophysicists, Dr. Robert J. Nemiroff and Dr. Jerry T. Bonnell, who decide which image or video appears each day and write the accompanying text.

There is no rigid, published scoring system, but several recurring criteria are described in public discussions and studies:
- Educational value: The image should allow a clear, interesting explanation that teaches some astronomy or space science, not just look pretty.
- Scientific or topical relevance: Preference is often given to images that show current events (e.g., a recent comet, eclipse, supernova, new mission result) or that illustrate important astronomical concepts.
- Public outreach impact: Images that can engage a broad audience, including non‑experts, fit APOD’s mission as a public outreach and science‑education project.
- Technical and aesthetic quality: Good composition and technically solid data processing help, though APOD sometimes features simple or even phone-camera images if they show a rare or instructive phenomenon.
- Originality and variety: Over time, the editors try to balance object types (planets, deep sky, atmospheric phenomena, spacecraft imagery, etc.) so the page is not dominated by just one kind of target.

How accurately is it possible to predict social media engagement with future Astronomy Pictures of the Day? APOD selection criteria are diverse and include educational value and topicality, but for people to be interested in learning more about an image, it first has to capture their attention...
