Hallo allerseits,

heute Mittag startet (vielleicht, Wetter 40% Chance)
eine (besser: zwei) neue Mondsonde(n),
Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory, kurz GRAIL genannt.

Details dazu in diesem Artikel von Spaceflight Now,

:super:

Im Moment in der Erdumlaufbahn,
weiter Richtung L1 (Sonne-Erde) geht's um 16:14 MESZ.

Gruss
Thorsten

Und die Sonden sind auf dem Weg! :super:

Neujahrstag.

Guten Flug!

Mondige Grüsse vom MittelMeerDobservatorio
Thorsten

PS: Und auch auf YouTube,
allerdings ohne die Drehung der Raketenstufe.

Jetzt es ist soweit:

NASA- GRAIL

PASADENA, Calif. – The first of two NASA spacecraft to study the moon in unprecedented detail has entered lunar orbit.

NASA's Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL)-A spacecraft successfully completed its planned main engine burn at 2 p.m. PST (5 p.m. EST) today. As of 3 p.m. PST (6 p.m. EST), GRAIL-A is in an orbit of 56 miles by 5,197 miles (90 kilometers by 8,363 kilometers) around the moon that takes approximately 11.5 hours to complete.

The next mission milestone occurs tomorrow when GRAIL-A's mirror twin, GRAIL-B, performs its own main engine burn to place it in lunar orbit. At 3 p.m. PST (6 p.m. EST) today, GRAIL-B was 30,018 miles (48,309 kilometers) from the moon and closing at a rate of 896 mph (1,442 kilometers per hour). GRAIL-B's insertion burn is scheduled to begin tomorrow, Jan. 1, at 2:05 p.m. PST (5:05 p.m. EST) and will last about 39 minutes.

NASA's Twin Grail Spacecraft Reunite in Lunar Orbit

PASADENA, Calif. -- The second of NASA's two Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) spacecraft has successfully completed its planned main engine burn and is now in lunar orbit. Working together, GRAIL-A and GRAIL-B will study the moon as never before.

GRAIL-B achieved lunar orbit at 2:43 p.m. PST (5:43 p.m. EST) today. GRAIL-A successfully completed its burn yesterday at 2 p.m. PST (5 p.m. EST). The insertion maneuvers placed the spacecraft into a near-polar, elliptical orbit with an orbital period of approximately 11.5 hours. Over the coming weeks, the GRAIL team will execute a series of burns with each spacecraft to reduce their orbital period to just under two hours. At the start of the science phase in March 2012, the two GRAILs will be in a near-polar, near-circular orbit with an altitude of about 34 miles (55 kilometers).

During GRAIL's science mission, the two spacecraft will transmit radio signals precisely defining the distance between them. As they fly over areas of greater and lesser gravity caused by visible features such as mountains and craters, and masses hidden beneath the lunar surface, the distance between the two spacecraft will change slightly.

Scientists will translate this information into a high-resolution map of the moon's gravitational field. The data will allow scientists to understand what goes on below the lunar surface. This information will increase knowledge of how Earth and its rocky neighbors in the inner solar system developed into the diverse worlds we see today.

GRAIL Mission Returns First Video of Moon's Far Side

In 2011, NASA's Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission launched twin spacecraft in tandem orbits around the Moon to measure its gravity in unprecedented detail. The mission will answer key questions about the Moon's internal structure and give scientists a better understanding of how our solar system formed.

NASA Lunar Spacecraft Complete Prime Mission Ahead of Schedule

PASADENA, Calif. -- A NASA mission to study the moon from crust to core has completed its prime mission earlier than expected. The team of NASA's Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission, with twin probes named Ebb and Flow, is now preparing for extended science operations starting Aug. 30 and continuing through Dec. 3, 2012.

The GRAIL mission has gathered unprecedented detail about the internal structure and evolution of the moon. This information will increase our knowledge of how Earth and its rocky neighbors in the inner solar system developed into the diverse worlds we see today.

Since March 8, the spacecraft have operated around the clock for 89 days. From an orbit that passes over the lunar poles, they have collected data covering the entire surface three times. An instrument called the Lunar Gravity Ranging System onboard each spacecraft transmits radio signals that allow scientists to translate the data into a high-resolution map of the moon's gravitational field. The spacecraft returned their last data set of the prime mission today. The instruments were turned off at 10 a.m. PDT (1 p.m. EDT) when the spacecraft were 60 kilometers above the Sea of Nectar.

Both spacecraft instruments will be powered off until Aug. 30. The extended mission goal is to take an even closer look at the moon's gravity field. To achieve this, GRAIL mission planners will halve their current operating altitude to the lowest altitude that can be safely maintained.

Science Magazine - Ancient Igneous Intrusions and Early Expansion of the Moon Revealed by GRAIL Gravity Gradiometry

Application of gravity gradiometry to observations by the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission results in the identification of a population of linear gravity anomalies with lengths of hundreds of kilometers. Inversion of the gravity anomalies indicates elongated positive density anomalies interpreted to be ancient vertical tabular intrusions or dikes, formed by magmatism in combination with extension of the lithosphere. The distribution, orientation, and dimensions of the intrusions indicate a globally isotropic extensional stress state arising from an increase in the Moon’s radius by 0.6 to 4.9 km early in lunar history, consistent with predictions of thermal models.

Twin Gravity-Mapping Probes Peer Into the Moon’s Secrets

“We see a picture of the moon being far more broken up and shattered than we’ve seen before,” said planetary scientist Maria Zuber of MIT here at the American Geophysical Union conference Dec. 5. The mission’s early data, also reported today in Science, provides the most detailed view yet of the moon. “This gravity field is the best gravity field for any [body] including Earth,” she said.

And, for the first billion years of its life, the early moon was expanding. GRAIL data returned evidence of long, magmatic intrusions into the lower crust – sites where magma seeped into cracks and solidified. These intrusions, totaling 3,300 miles in length, suggest the young moon warmed and expanded for about a billion years, with its radius growing between 0.3 and 3 miles.

“As the interior expands, the crust fractures, and that allows magma to well up into those cracks,” said planetary geophysicist Jeffrey Andrews-Hanna of the Colorado School of Mines. “That’s actually the opposite of what’s been happening for most of the lunar history. For the past 3.5 billion years, the moon has been gradually cooling down and contracting.”

Gravity Moon Map (Video)

GRAIL's Gravity Field of the Moon - This map shows the gravity field of the moon as measured by NASA's GRAIL mission. The viewing perspective, known as a Mercator projection, shows the far side of the moon in the center and the nearside (as viewed from Earth) at either side.

Units are milliGalileos where 1 Galileo is 1 centimeter per second squared. Reds correspond to mass excesses which create areas of higher local gravity, and blues correspond to mass deficits which create areas of lower local gravity.

Gravity Probes Unlock Deep Lunar Secrets

Here's how it works: When the lead craft is drawn toward a mass down below — be that a high-standing crater rim or a buried mascon — it accelerates slightly farther ahead of its sibling and vice versa. The key to GRAIL's success is that the craft kept track of each other's whereabouts five times per second — and they do so very, very accurately, detecting velocity changes as small as 50 nanometers per second. "That is one twenty-thousandth the velocity that a snail moves," comments Maria Zuber, the MIT geophysicist who serves as the mission's principal investigator.

The GRAIL mission isn't over, at least not quite yet. A few months ago, flight controllers cut Ebb and Flow's altitude by half, to an average of just 23 km, and that should yield another fourfold improvement in the gravity map's resolution.

But there's a penalty for skimming so close to the crater-tops: "We need to do three maneuvers a week just to avoid crashing on the Moon," Zuber cautions. In just a few weeks, the craft will be allowed to crash into the Moon — most likely targeted and timed so that the eagle-eyed Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter can watch.

Impact sites of GRAIL A (Ebb spacecraft) and GRAIL-B (Flow spacecraft) before and after the spacecraft's descent to the lunar surface:

Ebb (Grail-A) Impact Site

Flow (Grail-B) Impact Site

"Both craters are relatively small, perhaps 4 to 6 meters in diameter and both have faint, dark, ejecta patterns, which is unusual," said Mark Robinson, LROC principal investigator at Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Sciences, Tempe, Ariz. "Fresh impact craters on the moon are typically bright, but these may be dark due to spacecraft material being mixed with the ejecta."

"Both impact sites lie on the southern slope of an unnamed massif [mountain] that lies south of the crater Mouchez and northeast of the crater Philolaus," said Robinson. "The massif stands as much as 2,500 meters above the surrounding plains. The impact sites are at an elevation of about 700 meters and 1,000 meters, respectively, about 500 to 800 meters below the summit. The two impact craters are about 2,200 meters apart. GRAIL B [renamed Flow] impacted about 30 seconds after GRAIL A [Ebb] at a site to the west and north of GRAIL A."
